Dental Hygiene - Curriculum

 

**** SUMMER COURSE REQUIREMENT NOTICE ****

1)  Preclinical Services I (DENH 0249) & Preclinical Services III (DEHH 0449)
     2 clinical sessions, one day per week from June 15 to August 15.

     

2)  Dental Radiology
     Please note: Semester 2 begins August 1st annually.

3)  Pain Control
    Semester 4 begins in June annually.

Proposed transition from Associate to Baccalaureate degree programming - January 2016

The dental hygiene full-time curriculum consists of four semesters of classroom and clinical coursework. All classroom coursework is scheduled during weekdays, Rutgers SHRP offers flexibility in clinic scheduling, with Saturday and evening clinics available for the convenience of students and patients.

PLEASE NOTE:
All Science/Lab general education courses must have been completed within five years or less to qualify for course credit requirements for the Dental Hygiene Program.

As a prerequisite for consideration for admission into the program, students are required to complete six college level courses ( twenty-two credits) by the application deadline of April 1 annually. (Anatomy & Physiology I & II, Microbiology, General Chemistry I, English Composition I, General Psychology I) Minimum GPA of 2.85 for prerequisites.

In addition to the required prerequisite courses, the following four (4) general education courses: Math - Algebra (please refer to individual requirements for the affiliate through which the application is submitted); Public Speaking; Introduction to Sociology; and English Composition II must be completed with a grade of "C" or above PRIOR to the start of the dental portion of the Program.

NOTE: Essex County College Students: Math-Algebra is a 4 credit course, students must take a total of 87 credits to graduate.

General Education Requirements: may be taken at BCC, ECC, OCC, RVCC, TESC and UCC (or another college, as long as residency requirements for the School of application have been met).

The nature of dental courses may require students to act as dental service providers and patients with fellow students.

COURSES ARE TAUGHT IN ENGLISH

Students are required to attend classes on multiple campuses. Some courses may be web-based. Students must have computer and internet access.

Criminal background checks are performed by the State Board of Dentistry of New Jersey prior to licensure
