|BSHS Coordinated Dietetics Program
The SHRP Bachelor of Science in Health Science Coordinated Dietetics Program within the Department of Nutritional Sciences is a unique and flexible distance education program designed specifically for the Registered Dietetic Technician (DTR). The program consists of didactic course work and clinical rotations. All course work is offered through the internet on Moodle. The student’s transcript is evaluated, and applicable credits will be transferred towards the requirements for graduation. Upon completion of the program, the student receives a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree and will be eligible to take the registration exam for Registered Dietitians administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
Coordinated Dietetics Program Mission
The mission of the Coordinated Dietetics Program is to provide the didactic and clinical education necessary to train dietitians to have a broad based knowledge of food, nutrient composition and the role of nutrition in the regulation of body processes. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the RD examination and will be able to utilize this knowledge in working collaboratively with other health care professionals, educators and policy makers to promote health and alleviate many of the nutritionally related health problems existing in the community, state and nation.
In addition, the Mission of the CP program is to promote career advancement for individuals credentialed as a Dietetic Technician Registered (DTR) that builds on and does not duplicate previous education through a flexible program that combines a broad background in the health sciences, professional courses and clinical opportunities.
The program also serves to promote ethical, professional practice that will instill a sense of commitment and involvement in life-long learning.
Program Goals, Concentration, and Outcomes
The measurable goals of the Coordinated Dietetics Program are based on the program's philosophy and unique distance structure, and on the mission and goals of the University, the School of Health Related Professions and the Department of Nutritional Sciences. The goals reflect the concentration of the program,
Community and Public Health Nutrition Education, with an emphasis on preparing competent and professionally engaged entry-level Registered Dietitians using a novel pathway, transitioning DTRs to RDs through distance education.
Department of Nutritional Sciences
The Department of Nutritional Sciences offers dietetics education programs that are models for entry, specialty and advanced-level clinical nutrition in both academic and continuing professional education. The programs utilize in-person and technology driven platforms to prepare dietetics practitioners at all levels of practice to service the state, nation and communities abroad. Graduates have critical thinking and scientific skills needed for clinical dietetics practice, management, research, and leadership to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The programs instill an appreciation for interdisciplinary collaboration and education, and provide opportunities to achieve expanded roles in health promotion, disease prevention, and intervention for a multi-cultural society. The faculty members serve as role models in dietetics education, practice, and research, along with leadership and service to the profession.
