Ph.D. in the Health Sciences
Specialization in Psychiatric Rehabilitation

Program Overview

The Psychiatric Rehabilitation Specialization of the Ph.D. in the Health Sciences is designed to allow candidates to conduct dissertation research in psychiatric rehabilitation. This on-line program consists of a health sciences core (http://shrp.rutgers.edu/dept/IDS/phdhsciences/program.html) combined with Psychiatric Rehabilitation specialization courses. The Psychiatric Rehabilitation specialization is primarily focused on leadership and education and training. Students with a master’s level degree and significant Psychiatric Rehabilitation experience are eligible to apply. Psychiatric Rehabilitation is rapidly emerging as a unique discipline and the need for professionals with doctoral level training continues to increase.

Program completion requires a minimum of 60 credits of which 18 or more credits will be in Psychiatric Rehabilitation. Students are accepted based on the recommendation of a faculty member sponsor. Students work with a growing faculty of nationally known Psychiatric Rehabilitation practitioners, academics and scholars. Areas of study include organizational leadership and systems, non-profit management, program evaluation and outcome assessment, staff training and development, psychiatric rehabilitation practice, and emerging topics.

Faculty members in the Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Counseling Professions have extensive experience as educators and Psychiatric Rehabilitation practitioners. Faculty publications include the first comprehensive psychiatric rehabilitation textbook, numerous peer reviewed articles and book chapters. A sample of these can be viewed at our Publications page. Widely known, faculty members have provided training and consultation throughout the US as well as in Europe and Asia. Faculty members have taken leading roles in the United States Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (USPRA) and several of its state chapters as well as with the Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP) Certification Commission.
